CHENNAI, May 9: Tamil Nadu’s rapidly changing political landscape witnessed another dramatic development on Friday after the official X account of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) was suspended for alleged “violation of X rules,” triggering intense political debate at a crucial moment in the state’s government formation process.
The suspension came shortly after a controversial social media post reportedly linked to the party indicated support for actor turned politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in efforts to establish a coalition government following the fractured mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The unexpected move created widespread speculation across political circles as negotiations among opposition parties intensified to help TVK secure the required majority mark in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. The party emerged as the single largest formation in the election but fell short of the majority by a narrow margin.
While VCK has not yet officially declared unconditional support for the proposed coalition arrangement, the party’s two elected MLAs are being viewed as critical in the arithmetic required for government formation.
Support from Left parties and Congress significantly strengthened Vijay’s position in the post-election scenario. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist), with two legislators each, along with Congress and its five MLAs, extended backing to TVK, signalling a major political shift in a state historically dominated by the Dravidian rivals DMK and AIADMK.
The evolving alliance structure has generated excitement among TVK supporters, who view the developments as the beginning of a new political chapter in Tamil Nadu politics.
Amid the fast-moving developments, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the government. The meeting followed a series of consultations with alliance partners and independent legislators after no single party secured a decisive majority in the elections.
Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that efforts were underway throughout the day to consolidate support from smaller parties and independents before the formal swearing-in process.
If the coalition numbers are finalised, Vijay is expected to take oath as Chief Minister during a ceremony scheduled at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Saturday. Political leaders from across the country are likely to attend the event, including senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
CPI State Secretary Veerapandian defended the decision of Left parties to support TVK, describing it as a democratic responsibility in the interest of political stability and public mandate.
He stated that since TVK emerged as the single-largest party, supporting it was necessary to uphold democratic principles and ensure a stable administration in the state.
Meanwhile, TVK MLA-elect Marie Wilson expressed confidence that the final announcement regarding government formation would be made soon. He asserted that alliance discussions were progressing positively and conveyed optimism about Vijay assuming office.
The suspension of VCK’s social media account, however, added another layer of controversy to the unfolding political drama. Opposition voices questioned the timing of the action, while supporters of the party demanded clarification regarding the alleged rule violations cited by the platform.
Political observers believe the latest developments could redefine Tamil Nadu’s political equations, particularly if TVK successfully forms the government with support from smaller regional and national parties.
The situation remains fluid as parties continue discussions behind closed doors, with the final coalition numbers expected to determine the shape of the next government in the southern state.
