KOLKATA, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday expressed strong confidence about forming the next government in West Bengal, asserting that voters had delivered a decisive mandate in favour of political change and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
As counting continued across 293 Assembly constituencies, the BJP surged ahead in 171 seats, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was leading in 83 constituencies, indicating a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape.
Senior BJP leaders described the trend as a clear endorsement of the party’s campaign centred on governance, development and law and order.
Suvendu Adhikari Predicts BJP Government
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the BJP was firmly on course to form the next government in the state.
Speaking to reporters during the counting process, Adhikari said the electorate had voted overwhelmingly for change after years of TMC rule.
“The people of West Bengal have given a clear mandate to the BJP. We are confident of forming the government,” he said.
Adhikari also argued that attempts to divide voters on the basis of caste, religion and language had failed, claiming that a large section of Hindu voters united behind the BJP during the election.
According to him, the outcome reflected widespread support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spearheaded the BJP’s campaign through multiple rallies and roadshows across the state.
BJP Leaders Describe Verdict As Demand For Change
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya termed the counting trends a “historic rejection” of the ruling Trinamool Congress administration.
Addressing reporters outside a counting centre in Kolkata, Bhattacharya said the public had chosen people-centric governance over what he described as years of political confrontation.
“In this battle between Mamata Banerjee and the people of Bengal, the people have spoken clearly. The trend shows that voters want a new direction for the state,” he said.
Former state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh also echoed similar sentiments, saying voters had supported a transition in leadership.
“The atmosphere during polling itself reflected the public mood. People voted with the intention of bringing a new administration to power,” he stated.
Leaders Credit Free And Fair Polling Process
Several BJP leaders credited the Election Commission for ensuring peaceful and transparent polling across the state.
Gaighata candidate Subrata Thakur said the election process this year was more impartial compared to previous polls and claimed that voters were able to cast ballots without fear or intimidation.
“With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Bengal is moving towards a double-engine government. The people have voted freely for transformation,” he remarked.
Noapara candidate Arjun Singh also voiced optimism over the party’s prospects, saying the results would pave the way for political change in the state.
“We are fully confident that Bengal has voted for a new beginning under BJP leadership,” Singh said.
BJP Targets TMC Over Governance And Violence Allegations
Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said the emerging verdict was a rejection of corruption, alleged infiltration issues and incidents of violence against women under the TMC government.
He also paid tribute to BJP workers who, according to the party, lost their lives during political clashes in recent years.
“This verdict reflects the people’s anger against misgovernance and political violence. Bengal has voted for accountability and development,” Bista said.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Sishir Bajoria claimed the silence from the TMC camp during counting reflected the ruling party’s disappointment over the trends.
Political observers believe that if the BJP maintains its lead, the results could mark one of the most significant electoral transformations in West Bengal politics in decades.
