Kerala, Jan 30 : Actor Vijay Sethupathi, currently riding high on the success of his thriller Gandhi Talks, recently spoke candidly about his relationship with money in an interview with Gulte Pro. Despite a net worth exceeding ₹140 crore, the versatile actor admitted he continues to “chase money,” describing it as fundamental to life.
“Money is ultimate. Everyone needs it. I’ve seen how people’s masks fall off for money. It brings security and happiness. My relationship with money hasn’t changed I still pursue it. I work hard and deliver quality because that ensures people pay me fairly,” he said.
‘Money is basic, like food’
Sethupathi explained that while work brings immense joy, money remains a basic necessity, comparable to food. “Work gives more happiness, but money is essential for everything,” he said. The actor highlighted the unique satisfaction of creative breakthroughs, sharing how spontaneous ideas on set often lead to entire scenes, delivering deep fulfillment.
Even his earlier jobs, including accounting and working at a telephone booth, provided him happiness. “Wherever you find joy in your work, you are making yourself happy. I have always lived by that principle,” he added.
Financial success enables giving back
Beyond personal comfort, Vijay Sethupathi stressed that financial security allows him to help others. For the past five to six years, he has run a free employment service, investing roughly ₹1.5 lakh monthly, and manages a free clothing store for those in need.
“The happiness from work and the happiness money brings are different. Money lets me care for family, support people, and even produce films. That’s why pursuing it is important,” he explained.
Risk and responsibility as a producer
The actor also spoke about the financial risks he has taken as a producer, including returning his salary to ensure films were released. “Chasing money is not wrong it’s about your intention and how you pursue it. That defines who you are,” he said, underscoring his belief that financial success can be a tool for creating impact beyond oneself.
