Tamil Nadu, Dec 18 : Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and party president Vijay on Thursday denounced what he called a smear campaign by “vested interests,” asserting that such efforts would not succeed. Speaking at a major rally in Vijayamangalam, Erode district, Vijay marked his first large public appearance since the Karur tragedy on September 27.
Political Significance of the Erode Rally
The rally is seen as a key step for TVK to consolidate its presence in western Tamil Nadu. The venue, near Vijayamangalam toll booth on the Perundurai highway, is strategically chosen in the home district of Sengottaiyan, a former AIADMK leader recently inducted into TVK. Party leaders view the event as an opportunity to demonstrate strength in a region pivotal to state politics.
Extensive Crowd Control and Security Measures
Preparations for the rally were elaborate. The ground was divided into 72 sections, each accommodating around 400 attendees. Four layers of barricades and a 50-metre buffer between Vijay’s campaign vehicle and the crowd ensured controlled movement. The campaign van was reinforced with iron sheets for additional security.
Medical and safety arrangements included 58 doctors, 14 ambulances, 60 CCTV cameras, drone surveillance, and 34 temporary water and sanitation facilities. Fourteen separate entry and exit routes, along with 80 acres of parking for two- and four-wheelers, were established. Law and order were maintained by 1,797 police personnel deployed at the venue.
A Test of Organisational Strength
For TVK, the Erode rally is a crucial test of its organisational capabilities. Party officials consider it a significant milestone in building political momentum and preparing for upcoming electoral contests.
