Virat Kohli Sets Historic ODI Record, First Player in 54 Years to Achieve Landmark Feat

Kohli’s 74 at SCG not only aids India’s win against Australia but also cements his legacy as the ultimate chase master, surpassing legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.

Sydney, Oct 26: After a rocky start to the ODI series against Australia, Virat Kohli returned to form with a crisp 74 run innings in the third ODI at the SCG, helping India secure a consolation victory.

Kohli had scored ducks in the first two ODIs, raising questions about his form ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027, but his confident performance while chasing a target of 237 runs showcased why he is called the “chase master.” His composure at the crease reassured fans and highlighted his unmatched ability to perform under pressure.

Record-Breaking Feat:
With this knock, Kohli became the first player in ODI history to score 70 fifty plus scores while chasing, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who previously held the record with 69. Kohli’s remarkable record while chasing includes 8138 runs in 172 games at an average of 64.58, featuring 28 centuries and 42 fifties.

Batsman 50+ Scores While Chasing
Virat Kohli 70
Sachin Tendulkar 69

Surpassing Legends:
In addition to this achievement, Kohli became the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, crossing Kumar Sangakkara’s 13,434 runs mark. He now has 14,243 runs in 305 matches. While he has broken Tendulkar’s record of most centuries in ODIs (51), he still trails the all time record for most runs in the format (18,426).

Kohli’s innings at the SCG not only helped India in the series but also reinforced his reputation as one of ODI cricket’s greatest batsmen, particularly in high pressure chases.
