Mumbai, Dec 01 : Virat Kohli delivered a spectacular 135-run innings off 120 balls to guide India to a thrilling 17-run win against South Africa in the first ODI, raising fresh conversations about his potential participation in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The 37-year old’s knock, his first ODI century since February and the 52nd of his career, helped India post a competitive total. Kohli shared a 136-run partnership with captain Rohit Sharma, who contributed 57, securing a 1–0 lead for India in the three-match series. His performance earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak praised Kohli’s composure and class, saying, “It was an outstanding knock. He’s a thoroughly outstanding player, and the way he took responsibility was very good.”
Kohli’s century has reignited discussions about whether he and Rohit Sharma will continue in ODIs through the next World Cup. While assistant coach Morne Morkel suggested the senior duo could play until 2027, Kotak urged focusing on the present form rather than long-term speculation. “I don’t know why we need to look at all this. He’s really batting well,” Kotak said.
Kohli emphasized that his approach centers on physical fitness and mental readiness. “It’s about being physically fit, mentally ready, and excited to play the games I’m playing. Everything else takes care of itself,” he said. “I’ve never been a big believer in excessive preparation. All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel mentally sharp, I maintain my fitness every day it’s just the way I live.”
India will now travel to Raipur for the second ODI on Wednesday, aiming to clinch the series ahead of the final match in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.
