Virginia Becomes 17th State in the U.S. to Include Sikhism in School Curriculum

21-04-2023 : Virginia recently became the 17th state in the United States to include Sikhism, or the Sikh faith, in their school curriculum. The Virginia State Board of Education voted in favor of new History and Social Science Standards of Learning that include Sikhism for the first time ever. This milestone provides over a million students in Virginia with the opportunity to learn about the Sikh community. The Sikh Coalition, a US-based organization dedicated to promoting Sikh civil rights and education, has been actively advocating for the inclusion of Sikhism in the curriculum for over two years, alongside the local Sikh community. Harman Singh, Senior Education Manager at the Sikh Coalition, expressed that this change will help ensure that Sikhi can be taught accurately in classrooms across Virginia.

The Sikh Coalition has emphasized that inclusive and accurate standards are an important first step in combating bigotry, reducing bullying, and increasing cultural competency among students. The organization has been working with the Virginia Department of Education to address serious and well-documented flaws in the social studies standards, and to ensure that Sikhism, its practices, traditions, and contributions, are appropriately represented. The Sikh Coalition further stated that they are not only advocating for the Sikh community, but also for all groups whose histories should be taught accurately in schools.

Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world, with a rich history and a strong presence in the United States for over 125 years. Sikhs have made significant contributions to American society in various fields, including civil rights, politics, agriculture, engineering, and medicine. The inclusion of Sikhism in the Virginia school curriculum is seen as a positive step towards promoting diversity, inclusivity, and cultural understanding among students. It aligns with a broader trend in the United States towards incorporating diverse perspectives, histories, and contributions of different communities and religions in education.

The Sikh community in Virginia and across the United States has welcomed the inclusion of Sikhism in the school curriculum, as it is seen as a significant step towards reducing ignorance, promoting understanding, and fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society. It is expected to create greater awareness and appreciation of the Sikh faith and its followers and contribute towards building a more inclusive educational environment for all students.
