Dehradun, Feb 24: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday called for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across India, describing it as vital for strengthening social cohesion and national unity.
Speaking at an event for former servicemen marking the centenary year of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Bhagwat said the UCC introduced in Uttarakhand could serve as a model for the rest of the country.
“It would be a very good thing if the UCC is implemented across the nation. I believe it should follow the framework adopted in Uttarakhand,” he said.
Uttarakhand became the first state to roll out the Uniform Civil Code on January 27 last year. Bhagwat noted that the draft legislation in the hill state underwent extensive public consultation, drawing around three lakh suggestions, which were examined before finalisation.
During the interaction, Bhagwat declined to comment on the University Grants Commission’s proposed regulations aimed at addressing caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions, citing that the matter is currently under consideration before the Supreme Court.
Addressing veterans and serving members of the armed and paramilitary forces, he emphasised that while India is independent, strong defence forces remain essential to safeguard national freedom. He also reflected on the Sangh’s journey over the past century, stating that it expanded through societal support despite facing restrictions on two occasions.
Bhagwat encouraged former servicemen to participate in Sangh activities and contribute to service initiatives in line with their interests and capabilities.
