Vladimir Putin Set to Attend BRICS Summit in India, Signaling Strong Strategic Engagement

High-level participation from Russia, China, and Iran expected as India pushes for diplomatic consensus on global conflicts

Russia, Apr 16 : Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to participate in the upcoming BRICS Summit scheduled to be hosted by India in September 2026, according to a report by TASS. The development signals Moscow’s continued commitment to strengthening ties within the influential economic bloc amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
A Kremlin spokesperson confirmed that while official dates for the summit are yet to be announced, President Putin’s attendance is certain. If the visit materialises, it would mark his second trip to India within a span of nine months, following his earlier visit in December 2025 for the annual India-Russia bilateral summit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to travel to Moscow later this year for the next round of annual India-Russia talks, highlighting sustained diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
China and Iran Add Strategic Weight to Summit
China’s President Xi Jinping is also likely to attend the summit, underlining the significance of the event in shaping multilateral cooperation. Beijing has expressed its support for India’s leadership of BRICS this year, especially as bilateral ties between India and China show signs of gradual stabilization.
Additionally, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged India to steer the grouping toward expressing solidarity with Tehran over the ongoing conflict in West Asia. However, differing positions within BRICS particularly due to the inclusion of both Iran and the United Arab Emirates have made it difficult for the bloc to present a unified stance.
India’s Diplomatic Challenge Ahead of Ministerial Meet
As the current chair of BRICS, India is preparing to host the foreign ministers’ meeting on May 14–15, which is expected to set the tone for the summit. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are both anticipated to attend the discussions.
India faces the complex task of building consensus among member nations on sensitive geopolitical issues, particularly the West Asia conflict. The outcome of these deliberations could shape the joint declaration expected at the summit.
With participation from key global leaders and rising geopolitical stakes, the BRICS Summit in India is poised to become a crucial platform for dialogue and strategic alignment among emerging powers.
