Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Wednesday issued a strong Punjab bankruptcy warning, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of burdening the state with massive financial liabilities ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Reacting to reports of fresh proposals involving significant expenditure, Warring alleged that the ruling dispensation was making announcements without credible funding plans. He claimed the government, aware that it is in the final year of its tenure, is leaving behind a strained financial structure for its successor.
The Ludhiana MP pointed to earlier promises, including financial assistance of ₹1,000 per month to women in the state, which he said remains unfulfilled. According to him, similar large scale schemes are now being floated despite the state’s fragile fiscal condition.
Warring questioned how the administration plans to finance new initiatives when, he argued, Punjab is already struggling to service interest on existing loans. He urged the government to clearly outline funding sources before introducing any additional welfare measures.
“The state’s debt has crossed ₹4 lakh crore. We cannot allow Punjab to be pushed further into a financial crisis,” he said, warning against what he described as election driven announcements.
The Congress leader also remarked that the ruling party appears to have “nothing to lose,” suggesting it is prioritising short term political gains over long-term fiscal stability.
