Weather Update : Hot and Humid Weather Sweeps Jammu and Kashmir as Night Temperatures Rise

22-06-2023 : Hot and humid weather is forecasted for Jammu and Kashmir, as the night temperatures settle above normal in various areas, according to officials. The meteorological department reported that Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a low of 20.5°C, which was 4.79°C above the normal temperature for this time of year. Similarly, Qazigund, a gateway town in Kashmir, experienced a low of 17.2°C, which was 2.9°C above normal. Pahalgam, a popular tourist resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of 11.3°C, exceeding the normal temperature by 2.2°C.

In the north Kashmir area, Kupwara town saw the mercury settle at 17.4°C, 3.3°C above normal. Kokernag registered a low of 17.7°C, surpassing the normal temperature by 3.6°C. Gulmarg, the renowned skiing resort in Baramulla district, experienced a low of 13.5°C, which was 3.8°C above normal.

Moving to Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the temperature settled at 27.8°C, 4.7°C above the normal temperature. Other areas in the region also witnessed variations in the night temperatures, such as Banihal at 19.8°C (4.7°C above normal), Batote at 21.1°C (3.9°C above normal), Katra at 27.2°C (5.2°C below normal), and Bhaderwah at 20.0°C (above normal by 5.1°C). In Ladakh, Leh recorded a low of 5.2°C, while Kargil registered a low of 13.4°C.

Looking ahead, the meteorological department forecasts mainly dry weather until June 23, with the possibility of brief spells of showers and thunderstorms at a few places during late afternoon or evening. From June 24 to 28, generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate thundershowers is expected at fairly widespread places. Some areas in Jammu Division may experience intense showers for short periods.

While the above-normal night temperatures indicate the prevalence of hot and humid weather in Jammu and Kashmir, it is important for residents to stay prepared and take necessary precautions to cope with the challenging weather conditions.
