Weather Update: J&K Braces for Another Wet Spell Over 3 Days, Says Met Department

20-05-2023 : The Meteorological Department has announced the arrival of another wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir, lasting for over three days, starting from Monday. According to the weather forecast, the region can expect mainly dry weather until Sunday, with the possibility of a brief spell of rain or thunderstorm in some areas during the late afternoon or evening.

The Meteorological Department further stated that on Monday, there is a likelihood of “scattered” downpour, followed by a “widespread” downpour from Tuesday onwards in the Kashmir valley. In the Jammu division, isolated rainfall is expected on Monday, while fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is predicted from Tuesday onwards.

The period from May 23 to 25 is expected to witness widespread light to moderate rain, along with thunder, lightning, and the possibility of hailstorms and gusty winds in a few places, according to the Meteorological Department.

This month has seen a succession of wet spells in the Kashmir region. Last night, the temperature in Srinagar dropped to 9.7 degrees Celsius, which is nearly two degrees below the normal temperature. Pahalgam recorded a temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius, while the ski resort of Gulmarg reported 4.8 degrees Celsius. In Jammu, the temperature reached 22.6 degrees Celsius, and Leh recorded a chilly 1.6 degrees Celsius.

The announcement of the upcoming wet spell and potential rainfall has implications for various sectors, including agriculture, tourism, and transportation.
