Women’s World Cup: India vs Bangladesh match washed out due to rain

India finish fourth in the points table as their final league match against Bangladesh ends without result due to persistent rain at DY Patil Stadium.

India, Oct 27 : Heavy rain in Navi Mumbai forced the last league match of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup between India and Bangladesh to be abandoned without a result at the Dr DY Patil Stadium on Sunday night.

The downpour, which began around 10 p.m., disrupted play several times before umpires Lauren Agenbag and Sue Redfern called off the game, as conditions made it impossible to resume. India, chasing a revised DLS target of 126 in 27 overs, had reached 57 for no loss in 8.4 overs when the rain returned for the final time.

At the time of stoppage, Smriti Mandhana was unbeaten on 34 off 27 balls, while Amanjot Kaur who opened after Pratika Rawal injured her knee and ankle while fielding   was batting on 13.

With the match ending in a washout, both teams shared a point each. India finished fourth on the table with seven points from three wins and one no result, while Bangladesh ended seventh with three points, placed above Pakistan on account of a solitary win.

Earlier, rain had delayed the toss by 30 minutes and interrupted play twice, wiping out over four hours of the match. Put in to bat, Bangladesh managed 119/9 in 27 overs, struggling against India’s disciplined bowling.

Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav starred with figures of 3 for 30 from six overs, while N Shree Charani chipped in with 2 for 23. Sharmin Akhter top scored for Bangladesh with 36 off 53 balls, while Sobhana Mostary added a brisk 26 off 21 deliveries.

Despite flashes of resistance from Bangladesh’s middle order, India appeared well on course for an easy chase before rain dashed their hopes.

The washout means India advance to the knockout stage, while Bangladesh’s campaign comes to an early end.
