Women’s World Cup Star Richa Ghosh Appointed DSP by West Bengal Government

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee honours the cricketer with Banga Bhushan award, golden bat, and ₹34 lakh cheque at felicitation ceremony

Kolkata, Nov 9: The West Bengal government on Saturday appointed Richa Ghosh, the wicketkeeper batter from India’s Women’s World Cup winning cricket team, as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the state police.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally handed over the appointment letter to Ghosh during a grand felicitation ceremony held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The event, organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), celebrated Ghosh’s stellar performance on the international stage.
In addition to her appointment, Ghosh was conferred the Banga Bhushan award by the state government. She also received a golden bat and golden ball from the CAB, along with a ₹34 lakh cheque, presented by former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.
Explaining the symbolic amount, Ganguly said, “Since Richa scored 34 runs in the final match of the Women’s World Cup, we decided to present her a cheque of ₹34 lakh. Her role was crucial  coming in at number six with limited balls and a high asking rate, she played with great composure and made the difference.”
Both Mamata Banerjee and Ganguly praised Ghosh’s talent and leadership potential, expressing confidence that she would one day lead the Indian women’s cricket team as captain.
Sharing her experience, Ghosh said, “During net practice, I always set targets for myself. It helps me stay focused. I love challenges and performing in tough situations  that’s when I feel I can contribute most to my team’s victory.”
In a lighter moment, Banerjee also spoke about Ganguly’s illustrious career, saying she hoped to see him one day as the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“He led India brilliantly and has managed cricket administration with equal success. I believe one day he’ll lead the ICC too — no one can stop him,” the Chief Minister remarked.
