Mumbai, Jan 11: Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) bounced back strongly from their opening loss in the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) to secure a dominant 50-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.
MI posted a challenging total of 195/4 in 20 overs, powered by authoritative knocks from captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who remained unbeaten on 74 off 42 balls, and Nat Sciver‑Brunt, who scored 70 off 46 balls. The duo shared a 66-run partnership, with both batters punishing loose deliveries from DC to set a competitive target.
Chinelle Henry was the top scorer for DC with 56 runs, but the chase never gained momentum as DC’s top order collapsed early under MI’s disciplined bowling. Amelia Kerr and Nicola Carey bowled decisive spells, picking three wickets each, as DC were bowled out for 145 in 19 overs.
MI’s innings got off to a shaky start as the openers fell early, but Sciver‑Brunt anchored the innings with crisp boundaries and smart stroke play, including a series of sweeps and drives. Harmanpreet Kaur accelerated in the latter half, striking eight fours and three sixes, taking advantage of DC’s hittable deliveries. Nicola Carey provided crucial support, adding valuable runs in the middle overs.
DC’s reply faltered from the outset. Early breakthroughs by Carey and Kerr dismantled the top order, including Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt. Jemimah Rodrigues, making her first outing as DC captain, was dismissed cheaply for just one. Despite Chinelle Henry’s fighting 56, DC could not match MI’s scoring rate, losing wickets at regular intervals.
Kerr’s off-spin castled Niki Prasad and helped MI maintain control, while Carey’s pace and accuracy restricted runs in the middle overs. The disciplined MI attack ensured DC never threatened the target, allowing MI to record their first win of the season.
