X Admits Error in Grok AI Issue, Assures Compliance With Indian Laws: Govt Sources

IT Ministry warning prompts action; over 3,500 posts blocked and 600 accounts deleted, say government sources.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Microblogging platform X has acknowledged its mistake and assured the government that it will comply with Indian laws following a warning issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) over the Grok AI obscene content issue, government sources said on Sunday.

According to the sources, around 3,500 pieces of content have been blocked and more than 600 accounts deleted in connection with the issue. X has conveyed that it will adhere strictly to Indian legal requirements and ensure that obscene imagery is not allowed on the platform in the future.

The government had earlier sought detailed information from X, including the specific actions taken against obscene content linked to Grok AI and the safeguards put in place to prevent recurrence. However, the initial response submitted by the Elon Musk-led platform was found to be inadequate.

While X’s earlier reply outlined its content moderation and takedown policies related to misleading posts and non-consensual sexualised images, officials said it failed to provide crucial details such as the exact takedown actions taken in the Grok AI case and concrete preventive measures for the future.

On January 2, the IT Ministry issued a stern warning to X over the generation and circulation of indecent and sexually explicit content through the misuse of AI-based services such as Grok and similar tools.

Last Sunday, X’s ‘Safety’ handle stated that the platform takes action against illegal content, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing such content, permanently suspending offending accounts, and cooperating with local governments and law enforcement agencies when required.

“Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will face the same consequences as those who upload illegal content,” X had said, reiterating Elon Musk’s stance on zero tolerance toward unlawful material on the platform.
