Xiaomi Unveils New Xring Chip as China Pushes for Greater Semiconductor Independence

The smartphone maker is expanding its in-house chip strategy with a new Xring processor produced in partnership with TSMC.

BEIJING, Aug 25: Xiaomi has unveiled a new generation of its in-house Xring smartphone processor, strengthening the Chinese technology company’s efforts to gain greater control over key components and reduce reliance on external chip suppliers.

The new processor, introduced on Monday, represents another step in Xiaomi’s expanding semiconductor strategy as Chinese technology companies seek greater control over critical technologies amid ongoing global supply chain tensions.

Xiaomi has partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to manufacture the new chip, according to sources cited by Reuters. The move combines Xiaomi’s chip design capabilities with TSMC’s advanced manufacturing expertise.

The company has increasingly invested in developing its own silicon as competition in the smartphone industry intensifies. Designing processors internally can give manufacturers greater control over performance, power efficiency and integration with other hardware and software components.

The latest Xring chip is expected to strengthen Xiaomi’s position in developing smartphones with more closely integrated hardware and software. The company is also seeking to compete more effectively with established mobile chip suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Xiaomi’s semiconductor push comes as Chinese technology firms face a challenging environment shaped by US restrictions on advanced chips and growing competition for access to cutting edge manufacturing capacity.

The development also highlights the broader importance of domestic chip design for Chinese technology companies. Greater control over processors could help manufacturers reduce exposure to supply disruptions and external technology restrictions.

The partnership with TSMC demonstrates that advanced chip manufacturing remains an important part of Xiaomi’s strategy even as the company develops more components internally.

Xiaomi’s latest move reflects a wider industry trend in which major technology companies are designing increasingly specialised processors for smartphones and artificial intelligence applications.
