Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar Says Vijay’s Rise Reflects Declining Influence of Dravidian Politics in Tamil Nadu

BJP MP links growing support for Vijay and TVK to public dissatisfaction over governance, fiscal issues and divisive politics in Tamil Nadu.

BENGALURU, May 9: Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Friday said the increasing popularity of Vijay and his political outfit Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) reflects a changing political mood in Tamil Nadu, where people are searching for alternatives to long-standing Dravidian political dominance.
Addressing reporters in Bengaluru after meeting Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, the BJP parliamentarian said the emergence of Vijay as a major political figure has drawn nationwide attention and deserves serious political analysis.
He stated that many citizens in Tamil Nadu have become dissatisfied with what he described as divisive political approaches and poor fiscal administration by established regional parties. According to him, the growing public response toward TVK indicates frustration with conventional political structures in the state.
Wadiyar noted that the scale of public support received by Vijay cannot be dismissed as a temporary trend, adding that it reflects a broader mandate from voters seeking political change. He further observed that Tamil Nadu has historically witnessed similar shifts where popular personalities entered politics and gained strong public backing.
Referring to the political legacy of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran, he said the state has previously demonstrated its willingness to embrace leaders emerging from cinema and public life.
The Mysuru MP remarked that the electoral strength shown by TVK compared to several traditional parties should be studied carefully by political observers across the country. He added that the development signals evolving political expectations among voters, particularly younger generations.
Apart from political discussions, Wadiyar also focused on regional development matters during his interaction with the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister. He said he urged the state government to speed up pending lift irrigation projects in KR Nagar and Hunsur regions to improve water accessibility for farmers and local communities.
The BJP leader also submitted proposals related to irrigation initiatives in Kodagu and sought faster implementation of Cauvery-linked infrastructure works, including the construction of bridges connected to irrigation development in the Mysuru region.
He emphasised that such projects are important for strengthening agricultural productivity and improving long-term water management across southern Karnataka districts.
