Lieutenant Governor leads International Yoga Day celebrations at Srinagar’s SKICC, urges citizens to embrace wellness through daily practice

SRINAGAR, June 21: Emphasising the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said that yoga serves as a powerful tool for enhancing physical fitness, mental well being and overall quality of life. He made the remarks while leading the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the picturesque banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar.

Addressing a large gathering of participants, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted yoga’s enduring relevance in modern times, describing it as a timeless gift from India’s ancient wisdom that continues to benefit people across the globe. He noted that the practice helps individuals achieve harmony between body and mind while fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Referring to this year’s International Yoga Day theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” Sinha said the message is particularly significant at a time when rising stress levels, sedentary lifestyles and growing health concerns are affecting people across all age groups. He observed that yoga offers a practical and effective approach to maintaining both physical and emotional well being.

The Lieutenant Governor encouraged people from all walks of life to make yoga a regular part of their daily routine and participate actively in wellness initiatives being organised across the Union Territory. According to him, adopting healthy habits today can contribute significantly to a healthier and happier society in the future.

He further stated that yoga is much more than a physical exercise, as it promotes discipline, mindfulness and inner peace. Its growing popularity worldwide reflects its effectiveness in addressing modern day health challenges and improving overall life satisfaction, he added.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from government officials, fitness enthusiasts, students and members of civil society. Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Ittoo, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat were among the dignitaries present during the celebrations.

The programme featured a mass yoga session conducted by trained instructors, with participants performing various asanas and breathing exercises aimed at promoting flexibility, concentration and stress management.

International Yoga Day is observed annually on June 21 to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga and encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles. Across Jammu and Kashmir, special events, workshops and community programmes were organised to mark the occasion, reflecting the growing acceptance of yoga as a means to achieve holistic wellness.

The celebrations concluded with a renewed call for collective participation in promoting fitness, mental resilience and healthy ageing through the regular practice of yoga.
