Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a detailed investigation into rising complaints related to smart electricity meters across the state, asserting that consumers must not face penalties for errors beyond their control.
During a review of the energy department, the Chief Minister clearly instructed officials that no electricity connection should be disconnected if the consumer is not at fault. Emphasising the importance of public confidence, he said the smart metering initiative must enhance transparency rather than create inconvenience.
He directed authorities to streamline billing systems to ensure accuracy and timely issuance of bills. The CM also stressed the need for a responsive and fair grievance redressal mechanism, calling for swift resolution of complaints through all available platforms.
To assess the situation on the ground, the power minister and senior officials of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited have been asked to conduct field visits and address consumer concerns directly. He further instructed that helplines and digital complaint platforms, including call centres, social media, and messaging services, remain fully functional and responsive.
Reviewing the overall power sector, Adityanath reiterated that uninterrupted and quality electricity supply remains a top priority. He called for faster implementation of reforms such as smart metering, reduction in transmission losses, digitisation of services, and improved revenue collection to benefit consumers.
Officials informed that the number of electricity consumers in the state has more than doubled since 2017, alongside a sharp rise in power demand and energy sales. Significant progress has also been made in smart meter installations and feeder metering.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the performance of distribution companies but urged further strengthening of infrastructure. He called for faster transformer replacement, adherence to technical standards in new installations, and improved national ratings for discoms.
Focusing on rural electrification, he directed officials to ensure power supply even in small hamlets and complete key projects like agricultural feeder separation within deadlines to prevent overloading.
He also instructed that thermal power units operate at full capacity to meet rising summer demand. Additionally, new power projects and renewable energy initiatives, including solar and floating solar plants, are to be fast tracked, along with surveys for future nuclear power development.
