GUWAHATI, Nov 4: A massive uproar has erupted in Assam after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that popular singer Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore was not accidental but a case of murder, prompting fans across the state to demand exemplary punishment for those involved.
Speaking to reporters during a public event on Monday, CM Sarma said, “Now, with conviction, I can say that Zubeen Garg’s death was not an accident; rather, he was murdered in Singapore. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is preparing to file the chargesheet before December 17.”
The Chief Minister’s statement has triggered widespread emotional reactions among Garg’s admirers, who have taken out processions and gatherings in various districts, calling for justice and death penalty for the culprits.
One of Garg’s fans told IANS, “If our beloved Zubeen da was killed in Singapore, those behind this crime must be hanged till death. We want exemplary punishment and demand that the government ensure no one is spared.”
Zubeen Garg, a legendary figure in Assamese and Indian music, passed away earlier this year under unclear circumstances, sparking grief and speculation among fans and political leaders alike. The SIT formed by the Assam government has been investigating the case since then.
CM Sarma reiterated that the probe has reached a crucial stage and that the state government is committed to delivering justice without delay.
“The chargesheet in Zubeen’s case was initially scheduled for December 17, but I have directed the SIT to complete it by December 8. We are fully prepared from every side,” the Chief Minister said.
Explaining the procedural delay, Sarma noted that since the incident occurred on foreign soil, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) must grant formal clearance before the chargesheet is filed.
“I met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi yesterday to expedite the process. The SIT will approach the MHA within the next few days, and the chargesheet is expected to be filed between December 7 and 10,” he added.
The Chief Minister’s assertion that Garg was murdered marks a major development in the ongoing investigation, reigniting public outrage and emotional appeals for swift justice.
Zubeen Garg’s untimely demise continues to resonate deeply across Assam’s cultural and political landscape, with the state’s citizens united in their call for truth and accountability.
