AIIMS Jammu Emerges as Regional Healthcare Benchmark: CEO

AIIMS Jammu Treats Over 3.68 Lakh OPD Patients in Just Over a Year
  • Record Patient Footfall, Advanced Services Mark AIIMS Jammu’s Rapid Rise

SAMBA, Dec 27: In a little over a year of full-scale operations, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has emerged as a major healthcare hub for the region, providing treatment to more than 3.68 lakh out-patients and setting new benchmarks in patient care, medical education and research.

Addressing the media here, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, Prof Shakti Kumar Gupta, said the institute has rapidly evolved into a national model of tertiary healthcare delivery, in line with the Government of India’s vision of strengthening medical infrastructure in underserved regions.

Since becoming operational in August 2024, following its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February the same year, AIIMS Jammu has handled 3.68 lakh OPD cases, admitted 8,783 inpatients and treated 22,810 emergency cases, reflecting the growing trust of people across Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring areas.

Prof Gupta said surgical services at the institute have expanded swiftly, with 3,283 successful surgeries performed in eight state-of-the-art modular operation theatres. Critical care services have supported 1,297 ICU patients, while the Dialysis Unit has delivered 1,624 dialysis sessions, significantly easing the burden on patients who earlier had to seek care outside the region.

On the diagnostics front, AIIMS Jammu has conducted over 60,000 X-rays, 34,480 ultrasounds, 13,515 CT scans and 4,060 MRI scans, ensuring access to advanced investigations within the Union Territory. Results are delivered digitally through a mobile application, enhancing transparency and patient convenience.

Highlighting infrastructure achievements, Prof Gupta said the construction of 43 major buildings was completed in a record three-and-a-half years, despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This accomplishment earned AIIMS Jammu the Best Project Award at the 170th CPWD Annual Day, bringing national recognition to the project.

The CEO noted that AIIMS Jammu has also secured the seventh position in Outlook’s 2025 Government Medical Universities Ranking, further cementing its status as a trusted institution.

Several super-speciality departments are now fully functional, including Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Urology, Surgical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Neonatology and Cardiology, substantially reducing the need for patients to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir for advanced treatment.

A major highlight, Prof Gupta said, is the Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine, the only such facility across all AIIMS, where high-end genomic testing is carried out in-house. Along with a rapidly expanding Oncology Unit, the institute now offers comprehensive cancer care, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy.

Patient-centric initiatives such as an indoor navigation app, patient care managers, rogi sahayak mitra system, parikrama seva e-carts, AYUSH screening wing, and the Swasthya app for appointments and diagnostics have significantly improved patient experience and accessibility.

On the academic front, AIIMS Jammu has expanded its MBBS intake from 50 to 100 students per batch, with six batches currently enrolled. Two batches of B.Sc Nursing students have also been admitted, along with postgraduate programmes including MD, MS, MDS and M.Ch in Paediatric Surgery.

With over 140 ongoing research projects, including extramural-funded and student-led studies, AIIMS Jammu is fast emerging as a research-driven institution. Collaborations have been established with the University of Alabama (USA), IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu, alongside CSR partnerships with leading banks and institutions.

Looking ahead, Prof Gupta said AIIMS Jammu is being developed as a “Global Village”, with plans for centres of excellence, expanded super-speciality services, strengthened rural health outreach and a proposed Global Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.
