Ajinkya Rahane Responds to Criticism Following KKR’s IPL Loss

KKR Captain Highlights Consistent Strike Rate Despite Back to Back Losses

Kolkata, Apr 03 :  Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Ajinkya Rahane defended his performance following the team’s second consecutive defeat in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Rahane stressed that his strike rate has remained strong since 2023, suggesting that some of the criticism he faces could stem from bias or envy.

In a commanding display, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) clinched their first win of the season, beating KKR by 65 runs in Kolkata. Standout performances came from Heinrich Klaasen and Abhishek Sharma with the bat, while bowlers Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, and Nitish Kumar Reddy impressed with disciplined spells. Rahane, marking his 200th IPL appearance, struggled in the chase, scoring eight runs off 10 deliveries at a strike rate of 80.

Rahane Defends His Record Against Criticism

Rahane highlighted that, among Indian players in the powerplay since IPL 2023, only Abhishek Sharma has a higher strike rate (176.56) than his own 167.78. He remarked, “My strike rate is among the best in recent years. Some critics may not be closely following the game or might have a personal agenda. It seems envy plays a part in the negativity I face.”

The KKR captain added that while he may not always hit his stride, his intent at the crease remains strong. “There are times as a batter when you struggle to find rhythm. Critics may misinterpret this or expect a different style of play. I’m happy that my performances spark discussion. Playing alongside Finn Allen has been great, and freedom in the initial overs is essential. Struggles are part of the journey, and accepting them is key,” Rahane said.

Rahane’s IPL Milestones

Rahane ranks as the ninth-highest run-scorer in IPL history, accumulating 5,107 runs in 185 innings at an average of 30.58 and a strike rate of 125.32. His career includes two centuries and 34 half-centuries, with a personal best of 105*.

KKR Looks to Bounce Back

KKR’s tough start marks only the second time the franchise has lost its opening two matches. The three-time champions aim to recover quickly, with upcoming clashes against Punjab Kings on April 6 and Lucknow Super Giants on April 9.
