Former IB Special Director Anurag Kumar Takes Charge as Delhi’s New Police Chief After Government Approval

NEW DELHI, July 17: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday announced the appointment of senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, marking a significant change in the leadership of the national capital’s law enforcement agency.

Anurag Kumar, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the AGMUT cadre, previously served as Special Director at the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He was brought back to his parent cadre before being assigned the key responsibility of heading the Delhi Police.

The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The official order stated that Kumar would assume the role of Delhi Police Commissioner from the date he takes charge and will continue in the position until further directions.

The government order noted, “With the approval of the competent authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994), is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.”

Leadership Change in Delhi Police

Kumar’s appointment comes as part of a leadership transition within the Delhi Police. The outgoing Commissioner, Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch IPS officer, has been instructed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi after the new Commissioner formally takes over.

The change in command places a seasoned intelligence and policing expert at the forefront of Delhi’s security administration. With his extensive experience in internal security and intelligence operations, Kumar is expected to focus on strengthening policing strategies, maintaining law and order, and improving coordination among security agencies.

Anurag Kumar’s Administrative Background

Before taking charge of Delhi Police, Kumar held a senior position in the Intelligence Bureau, where he dealt with crucial matters related to national security and intelligence coordination. His long career in the police service includes experience in handling sensitive assignments and administrative responsibilities across different roles.

As Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will oversee one of the country’s largest metropolitan police forces, responsible for maintaining security in the national capital, protecting key institutions, managing public safety concerns, and responding to emerging security challenges.

Focus Areas Ahead for New Police Chief

The new Commissioner is expected to address several important areas, including strengthening crime prevention measures, improving public-police coordination, using technology for smarter policing, and enhancing security preparedness in Delhi.

The national capital frequently faces complex law-and-order challenges due to its status as the seat of the central government and the presence of major political, diplomatic, and administrative institutions.

Kumar’s experience in intelligence operations is likely to play a crucial role in tackling evolving security threats and ensuring better coordination between Delhi Police and other security agencies.

With his appointment, Anurag Kumar becomes the latest senior officer to lead the Delhi Police, taking responsibility for maintaining peace, security, and public confidence in one of India’s most important policing jurisdictions.
