CHENNAI, Aug 30: The Indian Army has stepped up its public outreach efforts by introducing a specially curated Light and Sound Show at the Victory War Memorial in Chennai, offering visitors an engaging account of India’s military heritage, valour and sacrifice.
Organised by Headquarters Dakshin Bharat Area, the inaugural public presentation received an encouraging response from visitors. Following the positive reception, the programme will now be held every Saturday for members of the public at the memorial.
The Tamil-subtitled Light and Sound Show has been designed to establish a stronger connection with the people of Tamil Nadu and make the stories of India’s Armed Forces accessible to a wider audience.
Families, school students, NCC cadets, tourists, veterans and citizens from Chennai and neighbouring areas will have an opportunity to experience important chapters of the country’s military history through an immersive audiovisual presentation.
According to a defence release, the programme seeks to bring the nation’s military legacy closer to the public while particularly engaging children and young people. By presenting stories of courage and sacrifice in an accessible format, the initiative aims to promote patriotism, national pride and appreciation for the service rendered by members of the Armed Forces.
The presentation traces significant episodes from India’s military history and links them with the contemporary role of the Armed Forces in protecting the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Rather than merely recounting historical events, the show seeks to bring alive the experiences of soldiers and the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women.
The inaugural presentation witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the public, schoolchildren, soldiers’ families, NCC cadets and tourists. Visitors particularly appreciated the inclusion of Tamil subtitles, which helped make the presentation more meaningful and accessible.
The Army said such programmes can create meaningful opportunities for interaction between civilians and the Armed Forces, thereby contributing to stronger civil-military ties.
The initiative is also intended to familiarise young citizens with the traditions, heritage and responsibilities of the Defence Services. It aims to encourage a greater sense of duty and inspire young people who may consider pursuing careers in the Armed Forces.
Located along the Marina waterfront near Fort St George, the Victory War Memorial is being developed as a centre for remembrance, military heritage and public education.
The memorial allows visitors to pay tribute to fallen soldiers while also gaining an understanding of India’s military evolution through exhibits and representative artefacts.
Among the exhibits is a decommissioned T-55 main battle tank, representing an important period in the history of the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps. The precinct also features replicas of Indian Naval vessels, including INS Anjadip and INS Vikrant, offering visitors a glimpse into the country’s maritime military heritage.
The replica of INS Anjadip also highlights India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and Tamil Nadu’s contribution to the country’s naval and defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The presence of these exhibits alongside the memorial has helped transform the site into a space where remembrance, education and public engagement come together.
The development of the Victory War Memorial as an accessible military heritage destination reflects Headquarters Dakshin Bharat Area’s broader outreach approach of remembering the fallen, recognising serving personnel, educating citizens and inspiring future generations.
The Army said it will continue to organise initiatives aimed at strengthening its relationship with society, increasing public awareness of India’s military heritage and highlighting the dedication and sacrifices of the country’s Armed Forces.
