Assam Floods Intensify: Death Toll Reaches 3, Over 37,000 People Affected

Persistent flooding across six Assam districts has displaced thousands, damaged farmland and infrastructure, while rescue teams continue relief operations in the worst affected areas.

Assam, 15 July 2026 : Assam is witnessing a fresh spell of severe flooding, with the situation deteriorating significantly as continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers inundate several districts across the state. Official figures released on Tuesday revealed that the number of people affected has surged dramatically to more than 37,000, while the death toll has risen to three.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one more fatality was reported during the last 24 hours from the Naduar Revenue Circle in Sonitpur district. The latest casualty has heightened concerns as floodwaters continue to spread across vulnerable regions, disrupting normal life and causing widespread damage.

The disaster has impacted six districts Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar. Floodwaters have entered 12 revenue circles and submerged nearly 100 villages, forcing thousands of families to cope with waterlogged homes, damaged property and disrupted livelihoods.

Lakhimpur has emerged as the worst-affected district in the latest wave of flooding. More than 35,000 residents in the district have been impacted, accounting for the majority of the state’s affected population. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rivers continue to flow above danger levels in several locations.

The sharp rise in the number of affected people marks a significant escalation compared to the previous day. On Monday, official estimates indicated that around 9,600 people across six districts were facing flood-related hardships. Within a day, the figure increased nearly fourfold, reflecting the rapid spread of floodwaters due to persistent rainfall.

To assist displaced residents, the state administration has intensified relief measures. The ASDMA said relief materials, including essential food items and emergency supplies, are being distributed through 20 designated relief distribution centres established in the affected regions.

Emergency response teams have also remained active in rescue operations. Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 16 stranded people from Sonitpur district over the past 24 hours, ensuring their safe evacuation from flooded localities.

Agriculture has suffered substantial losses as floodwaters submerged approximately 1,103.94 hectares of cropland. Farmers are expected to face considerable challenges, with standing crops damaged at a crucial stage of cultivation.

The floods have also severely affected livestock. Officials reported that two animals were washed away by strong currents, while more than 16,000 animals, including poultry, have been impacted due to inundated grazing areas and damaged shelters.

Infrastructure has not remained untouched by the disaster. Several roads have been damaged or rendered inaccessible because of overflowing water, hampering transportation and delaying relief efforts in remote villages. Authorities are assessing the extent of damage to bridges, rural roads and public infrastructure.

District administrations continue to monitor river levels and weather forecasts as additional rainfall could further aggravate the flood situation. Officials have urged residents living in low-lying and riverbank areas to remain alert and follow advisories issued by local authorities.

The Assam government, along with disaster management agencies, has assured that rescue teams, relief supplies and emergency services are being deployed wherever necessary to minimise the impact of the ongoing floods. Continuous surveillance and coordinated response efforts remain underway to protect lives and support affected communities as the state battles another challenging monsoon season.
