Assam, July 20 : The Assam government has intensified its disaster response after heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding across several districts in Upper Assam, prompting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to place the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force on standby for possible rescue and evacuation missions.
Sharing an update on Sunday, the Chief Minister said the state administration has sought the assistance of the armed forces to ensure swift action if the flood conditions continue to deteriorate. The move comes as water levels continue to rise in parts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, leaving authorities on high alert.
According to Sarma, the Army and the Air Force have been requested to remain prepared to assist local agencies with evacuation efforts, emergency transportation and rescue operations should the need arise. The state government is closely monitoring river levels and weather conditions to respond quickly to any emergency.
To strengthen relief management on the ground, the Chief Minister has deputed four cabinet ministers—Ajanta Neog, Bimal Borah, Keshab Mahanta and Susanta Borgohain—to immediately visit the flood-affected districts. Their responsibility will include supervising rescue work, coordinating with district administrations and ensuring that relief materials reach affected communities without delay.
The ministers have also been asked to assess the situation firsthand, monitor the functioning of relief camps and review the availability of food, drinking water, medical assistance and other essential services for displaced families.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to protecting residents, Sarma stated that the safety and welfare of citizens remain the administration’s highest priority. He said he is personally reviewing developments around the clock and has directed officials to respond promptly to changing conditions.
District authorities, disaster response teams and local volunteers have already been deployed in vulnerable areas, while emergency preparedness has been enhanced to tackle any further escalation caused by continued rainfall.
Officials have advised residents living in low-lying and riverbank areas to remain alert, follow official advisories and cooperate with local authorities if evacuation becomes necessary. Relief measures are being expanded to ensure timely support for families affected by the floods.
The latest flooding has once again highlighted Assam’s recurring monsoon challenges, with the state government focusing on rapid response, coordinated rescue efforts and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to minimise the impact on affected populations.
