New DElhi, Sep 26 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his birth anniversary, recalling his long public service and contribution to the nation.
In a post on X, Modi said, “Tributes to our former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. He spent many years in public life and served the nation with dedication.”
Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in the Punjab province of undivided India. He passed away in New Delhi on December 26, 2024.
Singh became India’s 14th prime minister on May 22, 2004, and returned for a second consecutive term on May 22, 2009. He served as prime minister for 10 years, leading the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
Before becoming prime minister, Singh served as Union finance minister from 1991 to 1996. During his tenure, India introduced a wide ranging programme of economic reforms that brought significant changes to the country’s economic policy and earned international recognition.
His political career also included several other key responsibilities, including serving as governor of the Reserve Bank of India and holding positions in the government and academic institutions.
Singh remained an important figure in India’s public life for several decades. His tenure as finance minister and later as prime minister marked significant periods in the country’s economic and political development.
The former prime minister’s birth anniversary is observed every year on September 26, with political leaders and others remembering his contributions to public service.
