Baramulla’s Jhelum Stadium to Bear the Name ‘General Bipin Rawat Stadium’ as a Mark of Tribute

08-12-2023 : The government of Jammu and Kashmir has approved to rename Jhelum Stadium Janbazpora in Baramulla as “General Bipin Rawat Stadium” in honor of the late former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). This decision, outlined in a government order, pays tribute to General Bipin Rawat, the first CDS of India, who tragically lost his life along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on December 8, 2021.

Gen Rawat had previously served in Kashmir as the General Officer Commanding of the Baramulla-based 19 Infantry Division, fostering close connections with the people of Baramulla during his tenure. The Youth Services and Sports Department and Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla are directed to promptly implement the change, including record amendments. Additionally, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, is tasked with organizing a suitable event to commemorate the renaming of the stadium. This move stands as a poignant tribute to General Bipin Rawat’s contributions during his service in the region.
