KOLKATA, May 9: West Bengal entered a new political phase on Saturday as chief minister-elect Suvendu Adhikari declared the beginning of a “new era of peace and prosperity” with the formation of the state’s first Bharatiya Janata Party government since Independence.
Ahead of the oath taking ceremony at the historic Brigade Parade Ground, Adhikari welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kolkata and described the occasion as a landmark moment in Bengal’s political history.
In a message shared on X, the BJP leader said the swearing-in ceremony symbolised the fulfilment of the aspirations envisioned by the nation’s founding leaders. He stated that the arrival of a BJP-led administration marked the start of “Sonar Bangla,” a vision centred on economic growth, improved governance and social stability.
Thousands of BJP supporters gathered across Kolkata to celebrate the transition of power, with party workers carrying flags, chanting slogans and participating in victory processions throughout the city. Security arrangements were tightened around the Brigade Parade Ground as senior national leaders, party workers and invited dignitaries arrived for the ceremony.
The BJP leadership projected the new administration as a “double-engine government,” highlighting the prospect of coordinated governance between the state and the Centre. Party leaders claimed this alignment would accelerate infrastructure projects, industrial investment, employment opportunities and welfare initiatives across West Bengal.
Adhikari stressed that the new government would prioritise development, transparency and law and order while focusing on strengthening public services and economic expansion. He also expressed confidence that Bengal would emerge as a major growth centre under the BJP administration.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Kolkata drew massive public attention, with supporters lining major roads to welcome his convoy. The Prime Minister is expected to address a public gathering after the swearing-in ceremony and outline the Centre’s vision for Bengal’s future development.
Political observers described the formation of the BJP government as a major shift in the state’s political landscape after decades of dominance by regional parties. Analysts believe the transition could reshape electoral dynamics not only in Bengal but across eastern India.
Meanwhile, opposition parties criticised the BJP’s celebrations and vowed to continue raising public issues from outside the government. Several opposition leaders said they would closely monitor the administration’s performance on governance and public welfare promises.
The swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground witnessed elaborate arrangements, cultural performances and participation from party workers across districts. The event was projected by BJP leaders as the beginning of a transformative political and developmental journey for the state.
With the new government preparing to assume office officially, attention now turns to cabinet formation, administrative priorities and the implementation of key promises made during the election campaign.
