CUK Enforces Austerity Drive, Shifts Friday Classes Online

New Measures Aim To Reduce Operational Costs While Ensuring Academic Continuity

SRINAGAR, May 20: The Central University of Kashmir (CUK) has announced a set of austerity measures, including online classes and work from home arrangements on Fridays and Green Saturdays, in view of the prevailing situation.

According to an official order issued by the university administration, the new directives will come into effect from May 22, 2026. Under the revised schedule, both teaching and non-teaching staff will observe Work From Home (WFH) on Fridays, while academic activities on designated Green Saturdays will also be conducted through online mode.

The decision was taken following the recommendations of the Dean’s Committee during a meeting held on May 13 under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor.

As part of the revised academic framework, the university has instructed departments to reschedule all practical sessions and laboratory classes originally planned for Fridays to Thursday afternoons. The move is aimed at preventing disruption to hands-on academic training and maintaining the regular academic calendar.

The administration has further directed that PhD viva voce examinations, seminars and workshops should be organised online wherever feasible. However, the order clarified that offline mode may be allowed in unavoidable circumstances after obtaining approval from the competent authority.

University officials said the measures are intended to optimise resource utilisation and ensure smooth functioning of academic activities while adhering to the austerity guidelines introduced by the institution.
