BEIJING, July 17: A devastating landslide struck China’s southwestern municipality of Chongqing on Friday, claiming at least eight lives while leaving 34 people unaccounted for after a large section of hillside collapsed onto a residential settlement. Emergency responders continue an intensive search operation amid fears that additional victims remain trapped beneath tons of earth and rock.
The disaster unfolded in Pengshui County at approximately 9:08 a.m. local time, following persistent rainfall that destabilized the mountainous terrain. The sudden collapse sent massive volumes of mud, stones, and debris crashing downhill, engulfing numerous residential buildings and causing widespread destruction within minutes.
Officials confirmed that more than ten houses were buried by the landslide. Rescue teams managed to pull ten survivors from the rubble, including two individuals who sustained critical injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Large-Scale Rescue Operation Underway
Authorities quickly launched an extensive emergency response involving more than 800 rescue personnel, including firefighters, police officers, medical teams, and disaster management specialists. Heavy machinery such as excavators and earth-moving equipment has been deployed to clear debris while trained rescue teams search for signs of life.
The operation has been complicated by unstable ground conditions. Emergency officials warned that continuous rainfall and loose soil have increased the possibility of additional landslides, forcing rescuers to proceed with extreme caution to ensure both survivor recovery and responder safety.
Television footage from the disaster site showed rescue workers carefully navigating piles of collapsed earth while excavators removed massive boulders and debris. In one dramatic rescue, emergency personnel successfully extracted a survivor who had been trapped beneath the rubble.
Thousands Relocated as Precaution
To safeguard nearby communities, local authorities evacuated over 1,100 residents from areas considered vulnerable to further geological activity. Emergency shelters have been established to accommodate displaced families while officials continue monitoring the stability of surrounding hillsides.
As an additional safety measure, utilities including electricity, water, and gas services were temporarily suspended within a one-kilometre radius of the affected zone. Authorities said the precaution was necessary to prevent secondary accidents such as gas leaks or electrical hazards during rescue operations.
Rainfall Believed to Have Triggered Collapse
Experts believe prolonged heavy rainfall significantly weakened the mountain slope before the catastrophic collapse occurred. The affected area lies near the Wujiang River, where steep karst mountains and rugged valleys are particularly vulnerable to landslides during periods of intense precipitation.
The region’s geological structure, combined with saturated soil conditions, created an environment in which the hillside could no longer support its own weight, resulting in the sudden collapse.
Extensive Damage to Residential Area
Visuals released by Chinese state media revealed a massive scar on the mountainside where the earth gave way. Large sections of rock and soil swept across the residential neighborhood, crushing homes and blocking access roads.
Several multi-storey buildings located close to the collapse zone suffered structural damage but remained standing. Authorities have restricted access to the area while engineers assess the integrity of surviving structures.
Heavy slabs of rock also tumbled into a nearby waterway, raising concerns about possible environmental impacts and further instability along the riverbank.
Emergency Relief Supplies Dispatched
China’s disaster management authorities mobilized thousands of emergency relief materials for affected residents. More than 8,000 relief items, including family emergency kits, tents, folding beds, blankets, and essential supplies, have been transported to Pengshui County to support evacuation centres and displaced families.
Medical teams have also established temporary treatment facilities to provide immediate care for survivors and emergency workers participating in the rescue mission.
Search Efforts Continue
Officials stressed that locating the missing remains the highest priority. Search teams equipped with specialized detection equipment continue combing through collapsed structures despite difficult weather and unstable terrain.
Authorities are also closely monitoring weather forecasts, as additional rainfall could further complicate rescue efforts and increase the risk of secondary slope failures.
The Chinese government has pledged to provide all necessary resources to support ongoing rescue operations and relief work until every missing person is accounted for.
