Delhi Government Announces Major Action Plan to Combat Air Pollution

The Delhi government aims to significantly reduce PM2.5 levels through a results-driven, coordinated strategy across departments.

New Delhi, Jan 17 : Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday unveiled an ambitious action plan to tackle the capital’s persistent air pollution crisis, with a clear focus on substantially reducing PM2.5 levels over the next four years.

The announcement came after a high-level review meeting with officials from multiple government departments. Emphasising accountability and measurable outcomes, Gupta directed departments to work in a “clear and results oriented” manner to ensure visible improvement in air quality.

“The fight against pollution is long-term,” the Chief Minister said. “Our government is committed to implementing a focused and outcome driven action plan to significantly bring down PM2.5 levels in Delhi within the next four years.”

PM2.5   fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometres or less  has been identified as the government’s top priority due to its severe health impact. These microscopic particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory illnesses, heart disease and asthma.

As part of the plan, the government has stressed the importance of strong inter-departmental coordination to ensure effective implementation of pollution control measures. Officials have been instructed to align efforts across sectors and adhere to a fixed timeline, with tangible results expected within the four-year period.

The action plan reflects the Delhi government’s renewed push to address air quality concerns through sustained, structured and science backed interventions, as the capital continues to grapple with hazardous pollution levels, particularly during winter months.
