Delhi MCD Polls: Standing Committee Members, Ward Committee Heads Set for Election

Civic body’s key panel to regain full strength as MCD votes for Standing Committee seats and ward committee leadership amid a high stakes BJP-AAP contest

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to hold crucial elections for its Standing Committee members and ward committee office-bearers on Wednesday, marking an important political contest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The elections are expected to revive the functioning of the MCD’s highest decision-making body, which has been operating with fewer members for several months. The completion of the process is likely to accelerate approvals related to infrastructure works, financial proposals, contracts and other major civic initiatives across the national capital.

Along with the Standing Committee polls, elections will also be conducted for chairperson and deputy chairperson positions in all 12 MCD ward committees. The results are expected to be announced on the same day after voting concludes.

Standing Committee to Return to Full Strength

The MCD Standing Committee consists of 18 members and plays a significant role in approving major financial and administrative decisions of the civic body. Matters involving large contracts, policies, development projects and expenditures exceeding Rs 5 crore require clearance from the committee.

However, since March, the panel has been functioning with only 12 members after elections for six vacant positions were delayed. The pending polls had affected the committee’s ability to operate at full capacity and slowed down decision-making on several key issues.

The elections, initially planned for June 3, were postponed and later fixed for July 15.

BJP Gains Advantage After Political Shift in MCD

The latest contest comes after a major change in the political equations within the 250-member MCD House. The BJP recently strengthened its numbers following the merger of 16 councillors from the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP), a breakaway group associated with the AAP.

After the development, the BJP’s strength increased to 139 councillors, while the AAP’s numbers declined to 102. The shift has given the BJP an advantage in the Standing Committee elections.

Political observers believe the BJP is in a stronger position to secure victory in the six vacant Standing Committee seats, although some ward committee contests may witness close competition.

BJP and AAP Field Candidates for Key Seats

The election battle has intensified across different zones, with both major parties fielding candidates for important positions.

In the Narela zone, BJP candidate Pawan Kumar will compete against AAP’s Ritu Mukesh Kumar. In the West Zone, BJP’s Shashi Yadav will face AAP nominee Sudesh Kumar.

The Shahdara South contest will see BJP’s Munesh take on AAP’s Beena.

For other Standing Committee vacancies, AAP has nominated Rajan Arora from Karol Bagh, while the BJP has fielded Sushil from Keshav Puram and Hem Chand Goel from Central Zone.

Ward Committee Elections May Witness Tight Competition

Although the BJP appears to have an advantage in the overall numbers, elections for ward committee leadership are expected to be more competitive.

The BJP holds a majority in eight of the 12 ward committees, while the AAP has better numbers in four committees. However, in several areas, including City SP, Rohini, Central and South zones, the final outcome could depend on the voting decisions of Congress councillors.

The Congress currently has only nine councillors in the MCD, but their support could prove crucial in committees where the contest remains close.

Congress Maintains Distance From BJP-AAP Contest

The Congress has indicated that it will not officially support either the BJP or the AAP in the elections.

Naziya Danish, a Congress councillor from Zakir Nagar, said the party does not have sufficient numbers to influence all zones and has decided to stay away from backing either side collectively.

She added that the Congress disagrees with the political approach of both the BJP and AAP and any councillor choosing to vote would do so independently.

Election Outcome to Shape MCD Politics

The results of the MCD Standing Committee elections are expected to influence the functioning and political dynamics of Delhi’s civic administration in the coming months.

While the BJP enters the contest with improved numbers and a stronger position, the ward committee elections could still produce surprises due to local equations and the role of independent voting decisions.

The final outcome will determine the balance of power within the civic body and impact how quickly important development proposals move forward in Delhi.
