SRINAGAR, June 26: With the arrival of the monsoon season, the Jammu and Kashmir Health Department has intensified disease surveillance across districts to prevent outbreaks of water-borne and vector borne illnesses through early detection, rapid response and public awareness initiatives.
Officials said district surveillance teams have been placed on heightened alert to monitor diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, hepatitis, dengue and malaria. Hospitals and primary health centres have also been instructed to report suspected cases immediately to enable prompt epidemiological investigations.
Health authorities have directed medical institutions to maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, diagnostic kits and emergency medical supplies to manage any increase in seasonal illnesses.
Laboratories across government hospitals have strengthened testing capabilities to ensure quicker diagnosis and timely treatment. Surveillance units are collecting data from healthcare facilities on a daily basis to identify unusual disease trends and implement immediate containment measures wherever required.
Public health teams have also launched awareness campaigns encouraging citizens to consume safe drinking water, maintain hygiene, eliminate stagnant water around homes and seek medical attention without delay if symptoms develop.
Officials emphasised that preventive measures remain the most effective strategy to minimise seasonal disease transmission. Municipal agencies and local administrations are working alongside the Health Department to improve sanitation, waste management and mosquito control operations in vulnerable localities.
Doctors advised people to avoid consuming contaminated food or water, wash hands regularly and ensure children and elderly family members remain adequately hydrated during periods of fluctuating weather conditions.
The Health Department has further instructed district hospitals to remain prepared for any surge in patient admissions by strengthening emergency response mechanisms and coordinating closely with field surveillance teams.
Public health experts noted that early surveillance combined with community participation plays a crucial role in limiting outbreaks and protecting vulnerable populations during the monsoon months.
Authorities said continuous monitoring will remain in place throughout the season to ensure timely intervention and safeguard public health across Jammu and Kashmir.
