November 4: Hindi is my comfort language and it is through this language that I want to express myself better, Geetanjali Shree, the winner of the International Booker Prize 2022, has said at the Sharjah International Book Fair here.
Kicking off the opening session on the second day of the 41st Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), Shree engaged with a large number of students from various schools in the UAE.
“I grew up at a time when regional vocabulary was much more common. Hindi is my comfort language and it is through this language that I want to express myself better,” Shree said on Thursday while talking to news platform ‘The Brew’.
Ret Samadhi, a book by Indian author Shree that was translated into English by American author Daisy Rockwell as “Tomb of Sand,” won the International Booker Prize in 2022. She received the International Booker Prize as the first writer of Hindi.
“Since every language has a long and rich history, we cannot compare them. Although English is now the dominant language used for international communication, other nations, including India, have a vast range of languages and dialects, and we should be proud of these, added Shree.
