IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai, Warns Of Extremely Heavy Rainfall

Thane and Raigad also on red alert; overnight downpour causes waterlogging, traffic disruptions in city

Mumbai, Sep 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday upgraded its earlier orange alert to a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the city and adjoining districts.

According to the latest IMD nowcast, Mumbai city, Thane, and Raigad are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall till 11:15 am. “Intense to very intense spells of rain and thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph are very likely in Mumbai city, Mumbai suburban, Thane, and Raigad,” IMD Mumbai said in its advisory.

An orange alert has also been issued for Pune, Ahmednagar, Beed, Palghar, and Latur, while a yellow alert remains in effect for the rest of Maharashtra.

On Sunday night, moderate to heavy rainfall lashed coastal Maharashtra, with Colaba recording 88.2 mm of rain. Several parts of Mumbai also witnessed significant rainfall   Bandra (82.0 mm), Byculla (73.0 mm), Tata Power (70.5 mm), Juhu (45.0 mm), Santacruz (36.6 mm), and Mahalaxmi (36.5 mm).

The overnight downpour led to traffic disruptions across the city. Severe waterlogging forced the closure of Andheri Subway, with Mumbai Traffic Police diverting vehicles via Gokhale Bridge. “Due to one to one-and-a-half feet of rainwater at Andheri Subway (Andheri West), traffic has been closed and diverted,” police said on X.
