IMD Predicts Surge in Rainfall Across Northwest India; Heavy Showers Likely in Haryana on July 20–21

Weather department predicts intensified monsoon conditions from July 20, with several northern, central and eastern states expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Panchkula, July 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a significant strengthening of monsoon activity across Northwest India over the coming days, warning of heavy rainfall in several states, including Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. According to the latest weather bulletin released by the National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC), rainfall intensity is expected to rise steadily from July 18 onward, reaching its peak during July 20 and 21.

The forecast suggests that widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and isolated heavy to very heavy showers could affect large parts of North India, while Central and Eastern India are also expected to remain under the influence of an active southwest monsoon system.

Monsoon Set to Intensify Over Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh

The IMD stated that Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are likely to witness intermittent rain from July 16 onwards, with precipitation becoming more widespread by July 21. Weather experts have issued a heavy rainfall advisory for the region on July 20 and 21, indicating the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic congestion and temporary disruptions in urban centres.

Authorities have been advised to monitor drainage systems and remain prepared for localized flooding, especially in districts that have already received substantial rainfall during the current monsoon season.

Punjab Likely to Experience Widespread Rainfall

Neighbouring Punjab is also expected to witness an increase in rainfall activity during the forecast period. Initially, scattered showers are expected between July 16 and July 19 before rain becomes widespread during July 20 and July 21.

The IMD has also predicted isolated heavy rainfall over several districts of Punjab during the same period. Agricultural experts believe the rainfall will benefit paddy cultivation and replenish groundwater reserves, although excessive rainfall may affect recently transplanted crops in some low-lying agricultural fields.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Expected in Himalayan States

The Himalayan region is expected to remain one of the most active weather zones over the next week.

Himachal Pradesh is forecast to receive scattered rainfall during July 16 and 17 before widespread precipitation develops from July 18 through July 22. The IMD has warned that heavy rainfall is likely on July 18 and 19, while very heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations on July 20 and 21.

Similarly, Uttarakhand is expected to experience increasing rainfall beginning July 17. Heavy rainfall is likely between July 16 and July 19, with very heavy showers anticipated during July 20 and 21.

Meteorologists have cautioned that mountainous regions remain vulnerable to landslides, flash floods, rockfalls and road blockages due to saturated soil conditions.

Jammu and Kashmir Region Under Rain and Thunderstorm Watch

The weather department has forecast scattered rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad during July 16 and 17. Rainfall activity is expected to become more widespread from July 18 onward and continue until July 22.

The forecast also includes thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, with occasional gusts up to 60 kmph. Heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas between July 19 and July 21.

Officials have advised travellers heading toward hilly regions to remain updated on weather conditions before undertaking journeys.

Uttar Pradesh Likely to Witness Strong Monsoon Activity

Rainfall is expected to strengthen gradually across Uttar Pradesh over the coming week.

West Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive scattered rainfall until July 18 before widespread showers develop during July 19–21. East Uttar Pradesh is expected to witness widespread rainfall beginning July 18.

Heavy rainfall has been forecast for eastern districts from July 17 to July 21, while western districts may experience heavy showers during July 19–21.

Agricultural experts believe the rainfall will improve soil moisture levels for kharif crops but have advised farmers to ensure proper drainage to avoid water accumulation.

Central India to Continue Receiving Monsoon Showers

The IMD bulletin indicates that central parts of the country will continue to receive steady monsoon rainfall.

Vidarbha, West Madhya Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience scattered rainfall through much of the forecast period. Chhattisgarh is likely to witness widespread rainfall until July 22.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely across Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions, particularly during July 16–19.

Heavy rainfall is expected over East Madhya Pradesh on July 18 and 19, while Chhattisgarh could receive intense showers during July 16 and 17.

Weather experts have advised residents to avoid taking shelter beneath trees during thunderstorms and remain alert to changing weather conditions.

Eastern States to Remain Under Active Monsoon Conditions

Eastern India is also expected to remain under the influence of vigorous monsoon activity.

Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim are forecast to receive widespread rainfall over the next several days.

Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for multiple districts across these states, with isolated very heavy rainfall expected over Bihar, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during different phases of the forecast period.

River catchment areas across eastern India may witness rising water levels if persistent rainfall continues.

Impact on Agriculture and Water Resources

The expected rainfall is likely to provide significant relief to farmers cultivating paddy, maize, pulses and other kharif crops. Improved soil moisture and replenished reservoirs are expected to support irrigation requirements across many states.

However, excessive rainfall may also increase the risk of crop damage, particularly in poorly drained agricultural lands. Agricultural authorities have advised farmers to monitor local weather advisories before undertaking sowing, fertilizer application or harvesting activities.

Reservoir levels across several river basins are also expected to improve, enhancing water availability for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.

Urban Areas May Face Waterlogging

Major cities across North India, including Delhi, Chandigarh and several urban centres in Haryana and Punjab, may experience temporary waterlogging if heavy rainfall occurs over short durations.

Municipal authorities have been advised to ensure proper drainage management and monitor vulnerable flood-prone locations. Commuters are likely to encounter traffic congestion during periods of intense rainfall.

Emergency response teams have also been placed on alert in several states to respond quickly to weather-related incidents.

Safety Advisory Issued by IMD

The India Meteorological Department has urged citizens to remain informed through official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local administrations.

People living in landslide-prone hill districts have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in urban areas should remain cautious while driving through waterlogged roads, while fishermen have been advised to monitor marine weather bulletins before venturing into coastal waters.

Authorities have also recommended securing loose outdoor objects and avoiding open spaces during thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.

Outlook for the Week Ahead

The latest IMD forecast indicates that the southwest monsoon will remain active over large parts of Northwest, Central and Eastern India throughout the coming week. Several states are expected to witness sustained rainfall, with isolated pockets receiving heavy to very heavy precipitation.

Meteorologists believe the enhanced rainfall activity will strengthen water availability across many regions while also requiring close monitoring for localized flooding, landslides and transport disruptions. The weather department will continue issuing updated forecasts as the evolving monsoon system progresses across the country.
