New Delhi, June 1: India and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding strategic and defence cooperation, with a renewed emphasis on maritime security, regional stability, and defence industry collaboration amid evolving geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific.
The commitment emerged during high-level discussions in New Delhi between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles. The meeting reviewed the progress of bilateral defence engagement and explored new avenues for cooperation across military, technological, and security domains.
Both sides highlighted the importance of safeguarding international maritime routes and maintaining a secure regional environment that supports economic growth and trade. The discussions reflected shared concerns over emerging security challenges, including disruptions affecting global energy supplies and increasing strategic competition across the Indo-Pacific.
A major outcome of the talks was the decision to move forward with a new framework aimed at strengthening defence industrial cooperation. India and Australia will begin work on a Memorandum of Understanding covering the supply of defence equipment and related services, paving the way for greater collaboration between their respective defence sectors.
The two countries also welcomed progress in updating their long-standing defence and security cooperation arrangements. Officials are working towards finalising an enhanced roadmap that will guide future maritime collaboration, reflecting the growing strategic trust between the two nations.
Maritime security remained a central theme during the discussions. Both leaders agreed to intensify cooperation in monitoring regional waters and improving awareness of activities across the maritime domain. Plans were also discussed to expand collaboration in underwater surveillance and related technologies, areas that are becoming increasingly significant for national and regional security.
Speaking after the meeting, Richard Marles indicated that defence cooperation would feature prominently during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Australia. He noted that both countries are making substantial progress on several initiatives that will further elevate the strategic partnership.
The Australian leader also pointed to emerging threats targeting critical undersea infrastructure worldwide, stressing the need for stronger international cooperation and technological innovation to address such challenges. He underlined Australia’s interest in working closely with India to develop advanced capabilities in this field.
The meeting further reinforced both countries’ shared vision of a stable and rules based Indo-Pacific. India and Australia reiterated their support for international laws governing maritime activities and emphasized the need to ensure secure sea lanes, lawful navigation, and uninterrupted commercial movement across regional waters.
Defence industry engagement also received considerable attention. The ministers welcomed growing business-to-business interactions and supported increased participation by defence manufacturers and technology firms from both countries. Future exchanges under existing bilateral mechanisms are expected to accelerate cooperation in research, innovation, and capability development.
Another significant aspect of the talks was the strengthening of cooperation among like-minded regional partners. India and Australia acknowledged the growing strategic alignment among Quad nations and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collective efforts in maritime security, disaster response, and regional capacity building.
The leaders also endorsed ongoing initiatives aimed at improving maritime domain awareness throughout the Indian Ocean Region. These efforts are expected to improve coordination, information-sharing, and operational interoperability among participating nations.
Following the meeting, Rajnath Singh described the discussions as highly productive and expressed confidence that bilateral defence relations would continue to reach new milestones in the coming years. He noted that the expanding partnership reflects the deepening trust and shared strategic interests between India and Australia.
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, the latest engagement underscores the determination of both countries to build a stronger, future-oriented partnership capable of addressing regional security challenges while contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
