New Delhi, Sep 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the spiritual significance of Samvatsari, saying the Jain observance offers a reminder of the importance of forgiveness, compassion and humility in strengthening relationships.
Samvatsari marks the concluding and most sacred day of the Shwetambar Paryushan festival. The occasion is traditionally dedicated to self reflection, repentance and seeking forgiveness for mistakes committed during the year.
In a post on X, Modi said the observance encourages people to let forgiveness and compassion guide their interactions with others. He also expressed hope that humility, kindness and goodwill would influence people’s actions.
“Samvatsari reminds us that forgiveness and compassion strengthen every bond,” the Prime Minister said, extending his greetings on the sacred occasion and concluding his message with the Jain expression “Michhami Dukkadam”.
The phrase is traditionally used by followers to seek forgiveness from others for any harm caused, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
As part of Samvatsari Pratikraman, devotees reflect on their conduct during the previous year, acknowledge their shortcomings and seek forgiveness from all living beings. The practice places emphasis on introspection, non-violence, compassion and reconciliation.
