India-Born Nikhil Breaks 60 Year Barrier with Selection in Australia’s T20 Team

Spin-bowling all-rounder rewarded for strong domestic performances; set to join Australian squad for Bangladesh series

India, June 12 — India born cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary has achieved a rare milestone after being named in Australia’s T20 squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, becoming the first Indian-born male player in more than six decades to earn selection in the national men’s team.

The spin bowling all rounder, who holds Australian Permanent Residency, was included in the squad for the three-match T20 series scheduled in Chattogram from June 17 to 21. The call up marks a significant step in Chaudhary’s cricketing journey and reflects his steady rise through Australia’s domestic ranks.

Chaudhary has recently been representing JB Bruges in the European T20 competition in Belgium and was also associated with the Delhi Capitals setup during the latest edition of the Indian Premier League. He is expected to link up with Australia’s white ball squad in Dhaka on Friday ahead of the Bangladesh tour.

Australian selector Tony Dodemaide said the selection panel had closely monitored Chaudhary’s performances, particularly in the Big Bash League, where he impressed with both bat and ball during the previous season.

According to Dodemaide, the all rounder’s consistent contributions and ability to influence matches earned him an opportunity to be part of the national setup. He added that the Bangladesh tour would provide valuable international exposure and place Chaudhary in contention for his debut appearance in Australian colours.

The upcoming series offers the 28 year old a chance to further strengthen his credentials in the shortest format and compete for a place in Australia’s playing XI. Team management believes the conditions in Bangladesh could suit his spin bowling skills and all round capabilities.

His selection also highlights the growing diversity within Australian cricket and underlines the pathways available for overseas born players who excel in the country’s domestic competitions.

With Australia preparing for a busy international calendar, Chaudhary will be aiming to make a strong impression during the Bangladesh series and convert his maiden call up into a long term opportunity at the highest level.
