India, June 30 : As several parts of India continue to experience above-normal temperatures, the Union Health Ministry has issued a fresh advisory directing states and Union Territories to enhance heatwave preparedness across healthcare facilities. Hospitals have been asked to ensure adequate stocks of medicines, intravenous fluids, oral rehydration salts (ORS), cooling equipment and emergency beds to manage cases of heatstroke and dehydration.
The advisory emphasizes protecting high-risk groups, including senior citizens, children, outdoor workers and people with chronic illnesses. States have also been instructed to improve surveillance of heat related illnesses and strengthen public awareness campaigns on hydration, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours and recognizing early symptoms of heatstroke.
Public health experts have warned that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, making long-term preparedness essential for India’s healthcare system.
