MOHALI, Nov. 4: Defending champions India will take on South Korea in the semi-final of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 on Wednesday, aiming to extend their unbeaten run and secure a place in the tournament’s final.
India have emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the title after producing an impressive performance throughout the league stage. The hosts finished at the top of the standings with 15 points from five matches, recording five consecutive victories and establishing a commanding goal difference of plus 29.
The semi-final will be played at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali, which is hosting international hockey for the first time. The match also marks the beginning of the decisive phase of the competition after the league fixtures were completed in Jalandhar.
India’s confidence has received a significant boost following their emphatic 8-0 victory over South Korea in their final league encounter on November 2. The result demonstrated the team’s attacking strength, defensive organisation and ability to maintain pressure throughout the match.
However, the Indian team management will be aware that knockout matches present a different challenge. South Korea will be determined to produce a stronger performance and prevent India from repeating their dominance.
India began the tournament with an attacking approach and maintained their consistency across all five league matches. Their performances have reflected the depth of the squad, with several players contributing goals and the team’s defensive unit providing stability.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh has been among the leading performers. His penalty-corner expertise remains one of India’s most important attacking weapons, while his leadership has helped the side maintain its composure during difficult periods.
Harmanpreet is currently the tournament’s leading scorer with nine goals. His ability to convert penalty corners into scoring opportunities has given India an important advantage against opponents who struggle to contain their set-piece routines.
The Indian attack has also received valuable contributions from Dilpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Sanjay and Angad Bir Singh.
In the previous encounter against South Korea, Dilpreet scored twice, while Jugraj, Harmanpreet, Lakra, Sukhjeet, Sanjay and Angad also found the net.
The performance highlighted India’s ability to score through different attacking combinations rather than depending on a single player.
India’s forward line has been effective in creating opportunities through quick passing, aerial balls and coordinated movements inside the opposition circle. The midfield has also played an important role in controlling possession and recovering the ball quickly after losing it.
The defence, meanwhile, has maintained discipline and limited opponents’ opportunities to penetrate the circle.
Goalkeepers Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Suraj Karkera have provided important support, making crucial saves whenever opponents have managed to break through India’s defensive structure.
Against South Korea in the league stage, India established control from the opening quarter. Dilpreet opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a backhand finish after receiving an aerial pass from Jugraj.
Jugraj extended the advantage through a penalty corner in the 11th minute before Harmanpreet converted another set-piece opportunity four minutes later.
India went into the first break with a three-goal lead and continued to dominate after the restart.
Shilanand Lakra added the fourth goal in the 33rd minute, followed by Sukhjeet’s strike a minute later. Sanjay increased the advantage in the 36th minute, while Dilpreet scored his second goal in the 40th minute.
Angad Bir Singh completed the comprehensive victory with a solo effort in the final minute.
The result confirmed India’s position at the top of the league standings and ensured that they would face South Korea again in the semi-final.
The other last-four encounter will feature Japan and Malaysia. Japan finished second in the league standings with 10 points, while Malaysia secured third place with nine points. South Korea qualified in fourth position with six points.
For India, the immediate objective will be to maintain their attacking rhythm without allowing complacency to affect their performance.
South Korea are traditionally known for their disciplined approach and quick transitions. Although they struggled against India in the previous match, they remain capable of creating problems when given space.
The Korean players are expected to focus on improving their defensive organisation and limiting India’s penalty-corner opportunities. They will also need to make better use of their attacking chances if they hope to challenge the hosts.
India, on the other hand, will look to use their speed and technical quality to put pressure on the Korean defence from the beginning.
The hosts will also be eager to make the most of the home support in Mohali. The shift from Jalandhar to Mohali provides an opportunity for supporters in the region to witness the final stages of a major international hockey competition.
The tournament’s move to Mohali is also significant for the city’s sporting profile, as the venue prepares to stage its first international hockey fixture.
The Indian team management will be particularly interested in maintaining the fitness of its key players during the knockout phase. With the final scheduled for November 5, managing workload and avoiding unnecessary injuries will be important.
The tournament has provided an opportunity for India to assess their combinations against some of Asia’s strongest hockey nations. The team’s performances have also demonstrated the value of having multiple attacking options and a strong penalty-corner unit.
India’s success in the league stage has placed them in a favourable position, but the coaching staff will not underestimate the importance of the semi-final.
A victory would take the defending champions into Thursday’s final, where they would face either Japan or Malaysia.
The Indian players will therefore enter Wednesday’s encounter with the clear objective of converting their league-stage superiority into another strong knockout performance.
With a place in the final at stake and the home crowd expected to provide strong support, the semi-final promises to be a major test of India’s consistency and title ambitions.
India will be looking to deliver another complete performance and move one step closer to retaining the Asian Champions Trophy.
