MUMBAI, Nov. 4: Indian equity markets continued their upward movement on Tuesday, with benchmark indices recording their fourth consecutive session of gains as strong corporate earnings, buying across major sectors and expectations of improved foreign investor participation supported market sentiment.
The BSE Sensex surged 1,225.07 points, or 1.62 per cent, to close at 76,917.85, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 370.05 points, or 1.58 per cent, to settle at 23,810.85.
The latest gains pushed both benchmark indices to their highest closing levels in approximately two months, extending a recovery that has added nearly five per cent to their value over four trading sessions.
Market participants attributed the positive performance to encouraging quarterly financial results, easing crude oil prices in the preceding session and early indications of a possible revival in foreign investor inflows.
Buying activity was broad-based, with 13 of the 16 major sectoral indices ending higher. Financial, fast-moving consumer goods and real estate stocks were among the leading contributors to Tuesday’s advance.
The rally also extended to the broader market, although gains in smaller companies remained relatively modest compared with the benchmark indices.
Small-cap stocks rose around 0.3 per cent, while mid-cap shares advanced approximately 1.1 per cent, reflecting a more measured improvement outside the largest listed companies.
The consecutive gains indicated an improvement in investor confidence after a period of uncertainty in domestic and international financial markets.
Corporate earnings remained one of the most important factors influencing trading activity. Several companies announced their September-quarter financial results, providing investors with fresh information about revenue growth, profitability and business performance.
The National Stock Exchange of India reported a 23 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 2,578 crore for the second quarter of FY27, compared with Rs 2,098 crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
The results marked the exchange’s first quarterly earnings announcement following its stock market listing in September 2026.
The performance drew attention to the exchange’s financial strength and its position within India’s expanding capital markets.
State Bank of India also reported an increase in quarterly profitability. The country’s largest public-sector lender posted a 14.28 per cent year-on-year rise in standalone net profit to Rs 23,038 crore for the September quarter, compared with Rs 20,160 crore a year earlier.
The banking sector’s performance remained an important factor for investors as financial companies continued to attract attention amid changing credit conditions and business expansion.
The latest results from SBI provided an indication of continued profitability at a time when investors were closely examining the performance of major lenders.
The exchange sector also received attention following the financial performance of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India.
MCX reported a 130 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 454.57 crore in the second quarter of FY27, compared with Rs 197.47 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
The substantial improvement in earnings placed the commodity exchange among the companies attracting investor interest during the latest results season.
The Indian Energy Exchange also reported growth in its October trading activity. Electricity traded volume increased 16.5 per cent year-on-year to 13.1 billion units.
The real-time market recorded a stronger performance, with trading volume rising 23.7 per cent to 5.7 billion units. However, the day-ahead market registered a decline of 3.8 per cent to 4,508 million units.
The figures highlighted changing activity across different segments of India’s electricity trading market.
Apart from financial institutions and market infrastructure companies, results from other listed businesses also influenced investor attention.
Happiest Minds Technologies reported a 15.12 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 62.19 crore for the September quarter.
Bata India recorded a 28.6 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 18 crore, compared with Rs 14 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
Awfis Space Solutions reported a substantial improvement, with its net profit rising 93.7 per cent to Rs 31 crore from Rs 16 crore.
However, the earnings season also presented a mixed picture, with some companies reporting weaker financial performance.
Neuland Laboratories recorded a 46.7 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 51.6 crore, while revenue fell 12.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 450 crore.
Its EBITDA declined 37.3 per cent to Rs 97.6 crore, while the EBITDA margin contracted to 21.7 per cent from 30.2 per cent.
The figures highlighted the pressure that competition and operating conditions can place on company profitability even during a period of broader market strength.
The difference in corporate performances reinforced the importance of company-specific financial results in determining individual stock movements.
Investors were also monitoring developments in international markets ahead of the United States midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
Global financial markets remained sensitive to political developments, technology-sector valuations and uncertainty surrounding international economic conditions.
Asian markets showed weakness in technology shares as investors continued to assess the outlook for artificial intelligence-related companies and the sustainability of their valuations.
The performance of technology stocks in international markets remained particularly important because of their influence on global investment sentiment.
Indian equities, however, displayed relative resilience during Tuesday’s trading session, supported by domestic corporate earnings and broad-based buying.
The movement in crude oil prices was another factor influencing investor calculations. Oil prices had declined sharply in the previous session, providing some relief to markets concerned about energy costs and their potential impact on inflation.
However, Brent crude moved higher again on Wednesday, trading around USD 104.30 per barrel, as investors assessed uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran.
The movement in international oil prices remains important for India because the country relies heavily on imported crude to meet its energy requirements.
Higher oil prices can increase the import bill, place pressure on the rupee and raise transportation and production expenses for companies.
Any sustained increase could therefore affect inflation expectations and corporate profitability across several sectors.
Meanwhile, market participants were preparing for another busy session on Wednesday, with quarterly financial results from several major companies expected to influence trading activity.
Apollo Hospitals, BSE, Nykaa, Dabur India, Exide Industries, Cummins India and several other companies were among those scheduled to announce their September-quarter results.
Investors were also monitoring developments involving the National Stock Exchange, Indian Energy Exchange, State Bank of India and other companies following their latest announcements.
The domestic market was expected to open on a cautious note on Wednesday after the sharp four-session advance. Gift Nifty indicated a potentially weaker start, reflecting mixed international signals and investor uncertainty ahead of the US election results.
The combination of strong domestic earnings and uncertain overseas conditions has created a market environment in which investors are increasingly focusing on company fundamentals.
For the broader market, the continuation of the rally will depend on the sustainability of earnings growth, the direction of foreign investment flows, movements in crude oil prices and developments in international financial markets.
Although Tuesday’s performance demonstrated strong buying interest, the uneven results reported by individual companies suggest that stock-specific developments may remain important in determining market direction.
The latest session nevertheless provided a positive signal for Indian equities, with gains across several major sectors and improved corporate earnings supporting the benchmark indices.
As the September-quarter results season progresses, investors are likely to assess whether companies can maintain earnings momentum and deliver sustainable growth in the coming quarters.
