NEW DELHI, Aug 10: India secured two medals at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, United States, with Basant Kumar Meghwal and Shahnavaz Khan producing landmark performances in the field events.
Meghwal, the reigning Asian U20 champion, won silver in the high jump, while Shahnavaz Khan also claimed silver in the long jump. Their performances marked the first time Indian athletes had won medals in these two events at the World Athletics U20 Championships.
The results provided a major boost to India’s emerging athletics programme and underlined the potential of the country’s younger field event specialists.
Meghwal’s performance was particularly significant given his status as the Asian U20 champion. His latest international result further strengthens his reputation as one of India’s promising high-jump athletes.
Khan’s long jump medal added another highlight to India’s campaign, giving the contingent success in a second field discipline.
India ultimately finished the championships with three medals, comprising two silver and one bronze. The tally matched the country’s medal haul from the 2021 and 2022 editions of the competition.
