Iran Proposes Easing Hormuz Tensions, Urges US to Lift Naval Blockade

Iran Strait of Hormuz Proposal: Tehran Offers De-escalation, Seeks US Blockade Relief

Cairo , April 27 : In a significant diplomatic development, Iran has put forward a proposal to ease tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, offering to relinquish its grip over the critical shipping route without addressing its nuclear programme, according to regional officials familiar with the matter.
The initiative, conveyed to Washington through Pakistan, underscores Tehran’s attempt to reduce military friction in the Gulf while pushing for the removal of US-imposed restrictions.

Tehran Signals Conditional De-escalation
As part of the proposal, Iran has called on the United States to end what it describes as an economic and maritime blockade. The offer is being viewed as a calculated move to stabilise oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a passage responsible for a significant share of global energy shipments.
However, the proposal notably excludes any commitment related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a key sticking point in past negotiations.

US Remains Firm on Nuclear Issue
The response from Washington appears cautious, with US President Donald Trump reiterating that any broader agreement must include curbs on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump signalled a position of strength, stating that the United States holds leverage in the negotiations and expects Tehran to engage on Washington’s terms.
Officials suggest that the current US stance could hinder progress, given the gap between the two sides on core issues.

Diplomatic Channels and Regional Mediation
Pakistan has emerged as a crucial intermediary, attempting to revive stalled talks between Tehran and Washington. Although discussions were expected to take place in Islamabad, plans shifted amid disagreements over format and conditions, with suggestions that talks could instead occur remotely.
Oman, which shares control of the Strait of Hormuz with Iran, has also remained engaged in facilitating dialogue.

Araghchi’s Strategic Russia Visit
Amid these developments, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in St. Petersburg for consultations with Vladimir Putin.
Tehran described the visit as an opportunity to coordinate with Moscow on evolving geopolitical dynamics, including the ongoing confrontation involving the United States and Israel.
Araghchi emphasised the importance of aligning positions with Russia during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.

Strait Tensions Continue to Impact Oil Markets
Despite a ceasefire understanding, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved, contributing to volatility in global oil prices.
The waterway is a crucial chokepoint for international energy trade, and any disruption has immediate economic repercussions worldwide.

Uncertain Path Ahead for Negotiations
Efforts to restart structured dialogue have faced repeated setbacks. A planned visit by US envoys to Islamabad was cancelled after Washington cited a lack of tangible progress.
Iran, meanwhile, has criticised what it calls “excessive demands” from the United States, blaming them for delays in negotiations.
With both sides holding firm positions, the proposal marks a tentative step toward de-escalation, but significant diplomatic hurdles remain before any breakthrough can be achieved.
