JERUSALEM/GAZA, May 19: Israel intensified its military campaign in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, carrying out fresh airstrikes and ground operations in northern and central areas of the enclave. The latest escalation has raised fears of a broader humanitarian crisis as civilian casualties continue to increase.
Israeli defence officials stated that the operation aims to dismantle militant infrastructure and eliminate armed networks operating within densely populated urban zones. Explosions were reported across Gaza City, Khan Younis and surrounding refugee camps through the night.
Medical authorities in Gaza said hospitals are struggling to manage the growing number of injured civilians amid shortages of medicines, fuel and emergency supplies. Humanitarian agencies warned that the healthcare system is nearing collapse.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military action, saying Israel would continue operations until security objectives are achieved. However, several international leaders called for immediate restraint and renewed ceasefire negotiations.
The United Nations expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation and urged all parties to ensure safe access for aid deliveries.
Demonstrations demanding peace and humanitarian relief were held in several world capitals, including London, Paris and Washington.
Analysts believe the ongoing conflict could further destabilise the Middle East and complicate diplomatic relations between regional powers already facing security tensions.
