Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and Key Mountain Routes Reopen: Traffic Restored After 24-Hour Suspension

JAMMU, October 23: After a temporary suspension of over 24 hours, vehicular traffic on the critical Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been fully restored. This pause in traffic movement was necessitated by essential road repair activities at the Dalwas area near Ramban, where the road has been experiencing sinking issues for several months.

Official sources confirmed the reopening of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, as well as the Mughal Road and the Kishtwar-Anantnag Highway. Closure of these routes was prompted by fresh snowfall in the high-altitude areas around Pir Ki Gali and Sinthan Top.

A Traffic Police official reported that the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was reopened for traffic at 5 am today, allowing the resumption of regular movement. The temporary suspension was designed to provide the road construction agency with the necessary time to execute critical repair work.

Furthermore, the Mughal Road, connecting the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu with South Kashmir’s Shopian district, has also been reopened for traffic. Similarly, the Sinthan Top road, which links Kishtwar in Jammu with South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, is back in operation.

Officials explained that recent snowfall in the Pir Ki Gali area, impacting both Poonch and Shopian sides, necessitated the closure of these routes to ensure passenger safety. The snow-covered stretches of the Pir Ki Gali axis have been diligently cleared to facilitate vehicular movement and ensure the safety of passengers. However, this led to some significant traffic congestion in various locations along the routes during the resumption of normal traffic.
