J&K Assembly Polls Unlikely Soon After BJP’s Poor Performance in Karnataka, says Omar Abdullah

Mehbooba Mufti Congratulates Congress on Karnataka Win, Hopes for Rejection of Communal Politics

13-05-2023 : The recent assembly election results in Karnataka have sent shockwaves through India’s political landscape. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the Indian National Congress, leading to speculation about the future of the BJP’s stronghold in Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah has said that the BJP will now be hesitant to allow assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir due to their poor performance in the Karnataka polls.

Abdullah, who is the vice president of the NC, tweeted that there is “no way” the BJP will have the courage to “allow” assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir any time soon. The J&K assembly was dissolved five years ago after the BJP withdrew support to PDP, which was leading the coalition government. Since then, mainstream regional parties have been demanding assembly elections in J&K, where the officialdom of the Lt. Governor’s administration has lost rapport with people.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, while congratulating the Congress for their sweeping win in Karnataka, tweeted that it wasn’t easy given that BJP unleashed the most vicious communal campaign. She described the Karnataka Assembly poll results as a “ray of hope,” hoping that the rest of the country will also reject “communal politics” and vote for its development and prosperity. She added that the BJP tried its best to communalize the situation, as is their habit, and that the prime minister tried to take the discourse on religious lines.

Meanwhile, Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari, who is considered close to BJP, tweeted that elections in Jammu and Kashmir must not be delayed any further as the voice of the people deserves to be heard. Congress activists in Srinagar and Jammu celebrated the victory of the party, bursting firecrackers and dancing in traditional style.

The election results in Karnataka have highlighted the deepening divide in Indian politics, with communalism becoming an increasingly potent tool for the BJP. The poor performance of the BJP in Karnataka has put a question mark over their ability to hold on to their power in Jammu and Kashmir, where they have faced opposition from mainstream regional parties. The coming days will be crucial in determining the course of Indian politics, and whether communalism or development will prevail.
