JKPCC Chief Pushes for Immediate Restoration of Darbar Move to Jammu

Srinagar, Dec 12: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief Tariq Karra on Thursday made a fervent appeal for the immediate restoration of the biannual Darbar Move, a longstanding practice of shifting the government’s administrative seat between Srinagar and Jammu.

Addressing the media in Srinagar, Karra underscored the economic and cultural significance of the Darbar Move, calling its suspension a major setback for Jammu.

“Jammu has borne the brunt of this decision,” Karra stated. “The business sector, both small and large, has been severely impacted, with the local community repeatedly voicing concerns about the economic downturn caused by this suspension. The Jammu Chamber of Commerce has openly criticized the move, reflecting the growing discontent among stakeholders.”

Karra also highlighted the adverse effect on the tourism sector in Jammu, which has traditionally benefited from the seasonal administrative migration. “The Darbar Move is not just about governance; it is a symbol of cultural exchange and regional unity, fostering bonds of brotherhood among communities across Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The JKPCC Chief reaffirmed his party’s unwavering support for the restoration of the Darbar Move. “Congress has always advocated for this historic tradition. The government must act swiftly to reinstate it,” he emphasized.

Karra’s remarks come a day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah assured that the Darbar Move would be restored, emphasizing that the uniqueness of Jammu must be preserved.

In response to queries, Karra called for reforms to address the inefficiencies of the current dual administrative system, terming it an “irony” that remains unaddressed.

“The dual control system needs a clear division of responsibilities. It is unfortunate that this arrangement continues to linger unresolved, causing undue hardship to the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Karra said.

He also expressed concern over delays in implementing business rules in the administration. “There’s no justification for this delay. The absence of these rules is hurting the people, and it’s imperative that they are finalized without further procrastination,” he remarked.

Karra’s strong advocacy for the Darbar Move and his critique of administrative delays highlight the urgent need for measures to bridge the growing gap between the regions of Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring balanced development and equitable governance.
